... aber dazu kommen wir noch. Erst einmal muss ich ganz entsetzt feststellen: Ach du Schande, es ist schon... Juni! Ich habe meinen Blog sträflichst vernachlässigt. Ich gebe es zu. Facebook richtet hier wirklich merkbar Schaden an. Es ist aber auch zu verlockend, dass man dort sofort & direkt Antworten erwarten kann, während beim Blog doch der Schwerpunkt ganz einseitig beim Verfasser liegt.
Gott-sei-Dank kann ich die Lieben in Deutschland zumindest an ein ganz witzig und flott geschriebenes Online-Journal verweisen, das sich vor allem damit auseinandersetzt, was einem so als nach Kalifornien gewehtem Deutschen Lustiges, Sonderliches, oder schlicht alltäglich Wahnsinniges widerfährt. Also, wer Lesestoff möchte, dem sei wärmstens das California Journal empfohlen! Viel Spass, auch beim Stöbern im Archiv!

Crepe Place & Absinthe?

I'm not sure that I'm braking a record, but come Wednesday I will have been at the Crepe Place 3 times in 5 days. First I went to a concert on Saturday that Josh of The Art Museums curated. Curated? I thought the word only applied to the visual arts, but I've since learned that you can curate a concert when you get three bands together for one night/one show, namely: THE GROGGS • THE MANTLES • STIFF LOVE. Josh recommended The Mantles, but I actually thought that louder, faster, sophomoric bands Stiff Love and The Groggs were more fun live. Had a blast. (More on The Art Museums)
Yesterday at Joe Stroud's get-together I found out that Joan has turned into a absinthe connoisseur. Today I find out that Crepe Place has been offering/promoting absinthe cocktails for years now, literally. How could I have missed it? Well, maybe because I don't exactly have a weakness for anise and licorice flavors, so the whole absinthe renaissance & euphoria over said spirit having become legal again in the US (long story) have largely passed me by. Until Joan announced today that "TUESDAY is ABSINTHE NIGHT AT THE CREPE PLACE." In capital letters. Yes. Now my curiosity is tickled, at last. Since The Crepe Place offers the New York Times' favorite absinthe, the Swiss Kübler Absinthe Superieure, the weather is simply gorgeous right now (80F=27C), very much entices me to go out, and the Crepe Place is a 5 minute bike ride down the street, I think I will make tomorrow night an absinthe night!
And the next day, being the third Wednesday of the month, the Crepe Place will see us for our traditional Mittwoch Stammtisch, of course. Cheers und Prosit!

15th Anniversary Berlin & Beyond Film Festival

The fact that the festivals is sponsored by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco, and that the website is exclusively in English does give a clear indication of who the target audience for Berlin & Beyond is. Germans might already be familiar with at least some of the scheduled movies, but Left Coast dwellers are offered a rare chance to thoroughly catch up on German cinema here. I've had to grudgingly admit that due to lingering flu symptoms I better keep a low profile for yet another weekend. No Roller Derby bout for me, no Berlin & Beyond in San Francisco. So I'm very happy that for the first time in its history the festival moves to San Jose for an Encore Day on October 30th (Camera 12 Cinemas). Not only do we get a second chance to see Endstation der Sehnsüchte, und Giulia's Verschwinden, San Jose's Encore Day offers the only festival screening of Fatih Akin's Soul Kitchen. I really liked his previous film Auf der anderen Seite. I did not catch Soul Kitchen when it played in the theater, so I look forward to watching it on the big screen now.

Pacific Rim Film Festival

I almost missed this year's Pacific Rim Film Festival. I've been dealing with the flu for almost a week, but I came across the announcement just in time to still catch this year's highlights. Today I get a second chance to see Departures, which won the Foreign Language Oscar in 2008. For tomorrow I have my eyes on Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. In previous years, a big part of the fun was checking out the super low budget productions, and the often very personal documentaries. Since I'm not exactly in top form the bigger films have to do this year, but it will still be a lot of fun. The atmosphere is always good at the Del Mar, the prettiest movie theater in town.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

Obwohl ich auf Facebook schon über das Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park berichtet habe, möchte ich doch noch einen etwas ausführicheren Absatz hier in mein Web-Tagebuch setzen als auf FB möglich. Das Fazit gleich zu Anfang: Es war phänomenal. Ich wusste, dass das dreitägige Festival extrem beliebt ist. Das Programm bietet grosse Namen wie Neuentdeckungen, und verteilt dabei insgesammt 6o Künstler/Bands auf 6 Bühnen und 3 Tage. Als ob das nicht schon Anreiz genug wäre, wird das ganze Tschinderassabumm auch noch komplett umsonst angeboten. Richtig gehört, Philantropist Warren Hellman zahlt die laut San Francisco Chronicle in die Millionen gehende Rechnung aus eigener Tasche, und zwar unglaublicherweise schon seit 10 Jahren. Der Mann ist offensichtlich stinkreich, und entweder ein Menschenfreund, oder jemand, der sich gerne eine Geburtstagsfeier mit 600 000 Gästen (in 2010) schmeisst, ....oder beides. Ich konnte mir Indigo Girls, Elvis Costello, und Patti Smith an einem Tag anhören, während ich nebenbei noch ein paar richtige Bluegrass Bands, sowie Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women, Nick Lowe, Marchforth Marching Band (superlustig live!), und zum Abschluss Emmylou Harris mitnehmen konnte. Letztere lebende Legende ehrlich gesagt unfreiwillig. Ich hätte mir lieber Mondo Cane auf einer anderen Bühne angesehen, musste mich aber mit meinen befreundeten Santa Cruzianern am vereinbahrten Treffpunkt zusammenfinden um den Rest des Abends & Rückfahrt zu planen. Nächstes Jahr möchte ich auf jeden Fall wieder hin, vielleicht mit Schwerpunkt Indie Bands, zur Abwechslung. (Photo: Dan Roman)

Heat Wave? Côtes du Rhône!

We had an unbelievable 105.6 °F downtown Santa Cruz today. A hot day calls for a nice, light, chilled white, so I had to open this recent find. Have I ever mentioned that I love Shopper's Corner? Reason number.... oh, who's counting!... would be the wine selection. In Germany I had tasted a Côtes du Rhône that I quite liked for it's pear flavor, a 2009 Château Saint-Cosme Côtes du Rhône blanc. I wrote a little paragraph about it, and never thought that I could get it in a local store. I did see it online, but the closest vendor is in LA, and asked $14 s&h for a $18 bottle of wine. Uhhh... I don't think so. The next time I found myself at Shopper's it occurred to me I should check the shelves. Turns out Shopper's carries a couple of Château Saint Cosme! Excellent! Except, Shopper's only had the red, not the white Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône. I came so close! Almost! They did have this 2007 Ogier though. More peach than pear, but I do detect a hint of Williams-Christ-Birne in it, the pear schnapps Germans lovingly call "Willi." Delicious. After I keep discovering really nice imports that are shockingly affordable I am more determined than ever not buy regional wines at prices that seem to be based on factors other than their quality. I'd love to buy local, but if they don't compare, they don't compare. Basta!

Sie taucht mit schöner Regelmässigkeit in jedem Tatort auf, und hat damit nicht nur überregionale, sondern wenn ich mich & andere Tatortfreunde draussen in der grossen, weiten Welt mitzähle, sogar internationale Berühmtheit erlangt. Als ich in Köln weilend die Wurstbraterei auch in einer Episode von "Mord mit Aussicht" erspähte, habe ich meiner Schwester unumwunden erklärt, dass die Bude jetzt zur numero uno auf meiner Sightseeing-Liste avanciert ist. Zu dumm nur, dass sie nicht zu finden war, weder an dem Flecken, den man von WDR Produktionen so gut kennt, noch an dem daraufhin von der Schwester recherchierten Originalstandort vor dem Schokoladenmuseum. Ja wo ist sie denn nun? Des Rätsels Lösung ist, dass die Wurstbude jeweils nur zum Dreh auf die andere, so viel malerische Rheinseite gerollt wird. Ihren Alltag verbrachte sie tatsächlich vor dem Schokomuseum, bis sie eines Tages vom Denkmalschutz als Schandfleck gebrandmarkt und vom Platz verwiesen wurde. Vor dem Museum steht nun ein sehr viel dezenterer Imbiss, während unsere Kultbude schon seit Mai diesen Jahres ein neues stetiges Zuhause sucht. Vielleicht könnte sie ja ein Plätzchen auf dem Deutzer Rheinufer finden, wo sie im Film sowieso schon so wunderbar hinpasst? Wär doch schön.

Monterey Jazz Festival

The Monterey Jazz Festival is coming up this weekend. I've never been, so I played with the idea of making this year my first. I had to browse a bit to figure out what the line-up is, and how it works. Since I've done all the work, why not post the link to the one page you need, the one that lists ticket prices and artists. Important to know is that MJF distinguishes between the "Arena" where all the big names appear, and "Grounds" where most of the stages are. I'm afraid I have to pass. $66 for a day, OR a night time Arena concert is a little more than I would want to spend, although I'm curious about Les Nubians, and I would have liked to see what Angelique Kidjo is up to nowadays. Grounds tickets are less, $50 all day Saturday, or Sunday. They give you access to the Grounds stages, but you will only be able to follow Arena concert simulcasts at The Jazz Theater. Well, have fun, if you attend, you with the deeper pockets.

Wine, Wein, et Vin: Riesling & Côtes du Rhône Blanc

Am Sonntag war ich in Capitola zum Art & Wine Festival. Die Roten geraten den Kaliforniern schon besser als die Weissen, ganz klar. Einem trinkbaren Riesling bin ich allerdings doch begegnet, Thomas Fogarty's 2008 Skyline Riesling (Monterey County). Lustig ist, dass Fogarty den Wein als "drier style Riesling" beschreibt, während er in Deutschland wohl eher als lieblich bezeichnet werden würde. Ich hätte mir vielleicht sogar ein Fläschchen erstanden, hätte ich nicht noch einen Vorrat an Dr Loosen zu vertilgen. Eingefallen ist mir in diesem Zusammenhang dann schlagartig, dass ich eigentlich hatte ein paar Zeilen scheiben wollen über einen überraschend intensiv und überaus kostlich nach Birnen schmeckenden Wein, mit dem ich in Wiesbaden Bekanntschaft machen durfte: Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2009. Ich kann ein wenig Hintergrundinformation über den Jahrgang anbieten, und darf darüberhinaus auf die traditionsreiche Quelle des Weines, Château Saint-Cosme, verweisen. Begegnet sind wir uns an einer noch lauschigen Sommernacht im August im Wiesbadener Canal du Midi, Weinhandlung und Bar, die meine Freunde gerne frequentieren.

Frankfurter Nächte

Eigentlich sieht der Frankfurter Osthafen ja aus wie im Bild links (geliehen von Stern View). Für Uneingeweite. Kennt man eine Frankfurterin, die sich auskennt (Danke, Irena!), kennt die Frankfurterin ihren Osthafen besser und weiss, dass sich hinter der industriellen Tristesse eine Oase befindet. Die Oase heisst Schwedlersee und versteckt sich hinter Bäumen am Ende eines Seitenarmes. Künstlich angelegt sollte der See ursprünglich der Erweitgerung des Hafens dienen, wurde allerdings nie ausgebaut. Stattdessen ist er seit 1921 das Vereinsbad des "Ersten Frankfurter Schwimmclubs von 1891 e.V." Bis in die 60-iger Jahre wurde hier auch regelmäßig feste trainiert, seither wird der Schwedlersee nur noch als uriger Vereinstreffpunkt und sommerlicher Badesee genutzt. Ist der Schwimmclub aus dem Wasser geht es nach Sonnenuntergang heutzutage erst richtig los, denn dann treffen sich hier die Nachtschwärmer ganz idyllisch unterm Sternenhimmel für Events in Gabor Papps Clublokal. Wir haben in einer wunderschön lauen Nacht Soul Searching betrieben. Im September gibt's noch einmal eine Chance die Atmosphere zu geniessen, danach darf man sich auf den nächsten Sommer freuen. Im Sommer gibt es auch Vorlesungen, und zwar Intensivprogramme, die UCSC auf einer eigenen Website vorstellt. Hübsch ist, dass eine Seite ganz Aufnahmen vom Unigelände gewidmet ist. Dort findet man neben Surf Videos auch schwarz-weiss Fotos vom legendären Anselm Adams, sowie bunt gemischte Campusaufnahmen, u.a. ein Bild vom Radweg (Jim Mackenzie), auf dem ich mich jeden Tag nach der Arbeit Richtung Stadt aufmache.

Yes, there are classes at UCSC right now. This time of the year is not as quiet as it used to be. It seems that more & more students try to catch up during the summer to speed up their stints her. Summer Session is in full swing, with its own little website to keep us informed. Neat about the site is that it has a "gallery" page where you can find image material ranging from YouTube surf videos to a variety of campus shots to artistic back & white images by photography legend Anselm Adams. Very cool. Now I can show my folks back home how my place of work looks like.

Was die Einladung im letzten Beitrag angeht, natürlich ist mein Geburtstag nicht am 1. August. Im Winter war es nur zu kalt um am Strand zu feiern, weshalb jetzt mit einer Freundin zusammen nachgeholt wird. Und a propos Beach Party, wir können genialerweise jeden Donnerstag zu einer gehen, und zwar am Hafeneingang, 5 Minuten mit dem Rad von mir entfernt. Festivals this Weekend

On Saturday, June 19, the yearly Japanese Cultural Fair will take place again from 11 am to 6 pm on Mission Plaza. "We believe that through the arts, craft, and culture of Japan, we can improve mutual understanding among neighbors on the Pacific Rim as well as enrich our community life here in Santa Cruz" states the Fair's website. I'm looking forward to San Francisco Taiko Dojo, and Marianne's Green Tea Ice Cream!

For something completely different (or maybe not, looking at the Japanese lady's hat): This weekend also brings us the "Central Coast Crazy Hat Days," a fundraiser organized by Mountain Parks Foundation in co-operation with California State Parks. I've never been there, nor do I own a crazy hat, but it looks like so much fun I might be tempted to throw myself into the crowd inexperienced and hatless. Aida sold out!

My friend JZ even volunteered to buy tickets early, but unfortunately we were still late, Aida was already sold out the afternoon of the show. Holy opera cow! So she secured tickets for next week's Roméo et Juliette. I finally found the Met's website for their HD live broadcasts as well as summer encores. It turns out that I had caught the tail end of two operas on PBS. Eugene Onegin and Carmen looked like two very attractive productions. I'm a little disappointed that Madama Butterfly will only have an encore appearance in Canadian movie theaters, particularly since Anthony Minghella directed. Grumblegrumble. O well, there's still a lot of opera deliciousness to enjoy.

The Met comes to Santa Cruz

Two of my friends brought this to my attention (thanks, guys!). I'll definitely be there for Aida, for which I found a helpful review on MusicalCriticism.com. But let's start with the basics, Wallace Baine's article in the Sentinel:

Native New Yorkers will tell you that California is nice and all. But there are certain finer things in life that are only available to those who live in or near New York City, among them a great pastrami sandwich, good playground basketball and the Metropolitan Opera. Well, you can scratch at least one of those off the list [...] The Santa Cruz Cinema 9 will be showing full Met productions on the big screen in glorious high-definition, beginning Wednesday June 16 with Verdi's "Aida." The summer series will feature recordings of six well-known, fully staged operas, each Wednesday night through the end of July. All times are 6:30 p.m. and tickets will be $15.

It's finally summer! Balmy nights call for... Riesling, of course. Chilled, peachy, slightly bubbly, yummy! This Mosel Riesling is available at Shopper's. I liked it so much, I had to take a picture of it.

Ich sehe im Geiste schon wie der Franke kritisch die Nase kräuselt, aber ich bin dem Herben schon so entwöhnt, dass ich einen recht lieblichen Mosel-Riesling an einem lauschigen Sommerabend ganz köstlich finde. Gefiel mir so gut, dass ich gleich ein Foto machen musste. Und, ganz genau, der Sommer ist endlich angekommen, und fühlt sich einfach wunderbar an!

another favorite pastime: Santa Cruz Derby Girls

I reported on the season opener back in March, but discovered only last week that we have a video of it now. Great! Saturday's bout (5/15), in comparison, was a bit more subdued, for several reasons. First I noticed that the music seemed at a lower volume than usual, which was somewhat strange considering the kind of music you enjoy at the bouts. The only explanation I could think of was that we were having ourselves a family-friendly event since the Derby Groms were scheduled to compete during the half-time break. After the Groms' performance a good part of the audience, proud parents I suppose, promptly disappeared, which made for a (relatively) quiet second half. Birgit and I thought that we could also detect a certain fatigue spreading. It felt like a double header with one team, the Groms, being very cute, but not exactly very exciting, which took some momentum out of the proceedings. Would it be better to schedule separate events for the kids? I, for one, will avoid the bouts from now on that include the Groms. Which is not to say that we didn't have fun. It's always a blast! I'm ready to order my tickets for the next Santa Cruz bout June 26th, if my perpetual nemesis, friggin santacruztickets.com, will let me. I always have problems with this site. (One specialty would be to send me a temporary password, only to lock me out as soon as I use it. Thanks!)

Über weissen Spargel in Santa Cruz muss uns jemand anderes informieren. Es gibt ihn schon wenn in Saison, aber entweder bin ich zu doof, oder habe nicht die entsprechenden Kultrequisiten, auf jeden Fall wird der weisse bei mir immer eher nix. Weshalb ich auf grünen umgestiegen bin und sagen muss: Einmal grün, immer grün, da er so viel einfacher zu handhaben ist!
Ich schneide ihn in Stücke und haue ihn in die Pfanne. Wenn ich nicht rechtzeitig wende und er leicht anbrennt schmeckt er sogar noch besser. Praktisch.
Ein Hinweis für Santa Cruzianer: Da wir die Gelegenheit haben frisch vom örtlichen Anbieter zu kaufen sollten wir sie auch ergreifen. Als Lohnsklavin ist mir der mittwöchliche Wochenmarkt versagt, aber ich kaufe zumindest bei Shopper's Corner ein und kann den Laden mit Überzeugung weiterempfehlen. Trader Joe's ist ja nett für andere Geschichten, aber vom Gemüsekauf dort würde ich allgemein abraten. Die langen Wege der teilweise eingeflogenen Waren sind nicht nur politically incorrect, sondern lassen das Gemüse schlichtweg altern bevor es in die Regale kommt. Man tut sich wirklich keinen Gefallen ein paar Cent zu sparen um dann die Geschmacksnerven mit komplett unspannendem Futtergeschmack zu langweilen. TJ Spargel insbesondere hat sich als holzig erwiesen, während die Stengel bei Shopper's bisher jedesmal frisch & saftig waren. Natürlich ist Unikat Shopper's teurer als Kette TJ, aber ich habe gerade festgestellt, dass man die wöchentliche Zeitungsanzeige mit Angeboten auch online anschauen kann, was sich allemal lohnt. Und die Wandmalerei auf der Branciforte Seite ist natürlich klasse! (Foto Coyro/Sentinel)

Among a plethora of stars, starlets and superstar athletes, it offers the classic shots that we all know & love, of Sam Shepard, several of Robert Downey Jr. over the years, and Nick Nolte, of course. Interesting are TSG's Favorite Mug Shots, "images of the not-so-famous that chronicle the rich assortment of American misbehavior." Leona Helmsley e.g. is pretty funny. Among all the dazed and disheveled, for once human looking celebrities The Thin White Duke stands out in his magnificent artifice. He did have a chance to tidy up, though, the "Rochester Police Department mug shot was taken three days after Bowie's arrest, when the performer appeared at City Court for arraignment." 1976. Still lovely! This incarnation just never went out of style. Iggy was nabbed the same night, apparently, but we don't have any pictures. And while we're at it, guess who declared: "Bowie said that after Let's Dance, which is his biggest album ever and obviously not his best, he was doing these stadium gigs and looked out at the audience and suddenly realized that he had Phil Collins fans instead of Iggy Pop fans. And that's how I feel about everything I do: I want Iggy Pop fans." Guess! Ricky Gervais. Biggest Bowie fan. "See his pug-nosed face" in one of the top cringe-inducing scenes in comedy history! If you're not familiar with Extras, you might have to watch the whole episode, though, to appreciate it, including the Bowie interview. They've been mates & at it at least since back in The Observer days. And yes, I'm feeling a little sentimental tonight!

Set in a World War II military factory, our production of Donizetti’s timeless comic opera tells a love story with wonderful music and a fabulous chorus. The doting Nemorino is madly in love with Adina, the factory owner, who hardly gives him the time of day. Along comes Sergeant Belcore who spurs Adina's interest so much so that she even considers marrying him, further fueling Nemorino's despair and desperation. Who can help poor Nemorino before it is too late? Only the quack Dr. Dulcamara, a charming hustler and con man who peddles bad Bordeaux as a magic "elixir." Dulcamara helps Nemorino get his groove back and find love in the end!

Buchempfehlung: Monika Maron

Ich lese gerade das zweite Buch von Monika Maron. Ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich begeistert bin, weil soviel Gefühlsaufwallung mir verkehrt vorkommen würde um ihre klare, nonsense-freie, oft ironische und trocken-humorige Schreibweise anzupreisen. Es gefällt mir nur ungemein wie sie sehr schwierige, potentiell depremierende Themen wie Älterwerden/Sinnverlust im Rückblick auf das vergangene Leben/Ratlosigkeit in Hinsicht auf die Zukunft in leichtem, sogar lustigem Ton aufzeichnet. Es hat sich so ergeben, dass ich das Schicksal der Protagonistin Johanna rückwärts lese: "Ach, Glück" kam zuerst, nun stelle ich fest, dass dieser Stosseufzer Johanna schon in "Endmoränen" entwichen ist, und gerade habe ich beim Googeln dieses Romantitels festgestellt, das ihre Geschichte noch weiter zurückzuverfolgen wäre: "Wer ist diese Frau, wer ist Johanna, die Ich-Erzählerin? Maron-Leser kennen sie bereits aus früheren Romanen als eine trotzige Kämpferin." laut Rezension Sabine Dultz im Münchner Merkur. Aha. Das garantiert mir weiter Maron-Lesestoff. Die Herren und Damen Kritiker scheinen perplex, sie verstehen nicht ganz wieso ihnen Maron gefallen kann, obwohl in den Romanen doch gar nichts passiert! Kann es sein, dass Handlung zweitrangig erscheint, wenn jemand so gut schreiben kann? Mir auf jeden Fall macht das Lesen weiterhin sehr viel Spass.

Empfehlung diese Woche: Tatort "Tango für Borowski"

Ich warte immer noch auf Online-Erstausstrahlung meiner Lieblingstatortkomissare (ist das wirklich ein Wort im Deutschen?) Meine Spitzenreiter sind ganz klar Münster und München. Witzig ist auch Wien. Die schöne Hannoveranerin und die sympathischen Kölner waren schon dran in 2010. Diese Woche, und nur diese Woche in der ARD Mediathek als Video online (20 bis 6 Uhr MEZ) zu sehen, möchte ich das nordisch-kühle Kieler Team wärmstes empfehlen. Es verschlägt Borowski und Frieda Jung in Tango für Borowski nämlich noch einmal ein gaaanz, ganz gutes Stück weiter nach oben auf der Landkarte, nämlich nach Finnland. Das lässt uns in den Genuss eines recht exotischen Tatorts kommen, der mit einer Prise Kaurismäki, und einem Schuss Coen-Brüder gewürzt zu einer schrägen, unterkühlt-humorigen Unterhaltung wird. Interessant auch, wie sehr der europäische Norden an Redneck-infizierte Südstaaten erinnert. Am Schluss vielleicht ein bisschen lang (hatten die Macher da zu viel Spass, und wollten noch nicht zum Ende kommen?), trotzdem enorm sehenswert.

Larry Sultan

My second discovery last week was the work of Larry Sultan, renowned California photographer and professor at the California College of the Arts in SF, who had died at the age of 63 last December. His most influential works appear in two different rooms of THE VIEW FROM HERE at SFMOMA representing two different stages not only in the artist's life, but in the history of art photography as well. They're actually so different that I did not make the connection until I noticed the cross-reference. First on display are black & white examples from Evidence — a 1977 collaboration with Mike Mandel. This series of "found" images selected from industrial and government archives, are detached, bizarre, funny statements on society's strange endeavors, no titles. no captions. On the other end of the spectrum, and placed towards the end of the exhibit, the two brilliant color photos from the very personal Pictures from Home are as stunning as they are moving. Thai Spice

A day in the city last week brought two discoveries. The first was Thai Spice on Polk. Walking down the street we were drawn to the warm colors of the exterior, and a free table in one of the sunny bay windows. When a sign in the door announced that the Chronicle had placed it among the five best Thai places in SF, our growling bellies immediately ordered us to go for it. No regrets! The prices weren't any higher than usual; the place is very cozy, yet more elegant than your average Thai place, and the food was excellent! The dishes were spicy as promised, but the spices did not strongarm the other ingredients, but instead managed to coexist with all other individual flavors. The Basil Leaf entree with prawns was quite possibly the best Thai basil meal I've ever had.

New Choir

I have a cold. Annoying, of course, but at least it gives me a chance to catch up on blog entries, for which I couldn't find the time earlier. Among other events that I did not mention was "Best of the Rest" of the "8 Tens @ 8" at the Actor's Theatre, which I actually liked better than last year's. It was only on schedule for four days, so let me move on to recommend something that you don't have to wait another year to enjoy: The New Choir. I saw them in concert late March at Holy Cross Church. They were absolutely amazing! I was so impressed that I had to buy the latest CD. When I didn't have enough money, the lady selling the CDs was sweet enough to offer that I just take one, and send them a check later. What astounding confidence in my honesty! I was able to borrow from a friend, though. It's not quite the same as the incredibly beautiful live performance, but I still enjoy listening to the recording. The New Choir will be touring Korea in June, but they will give a farewell concert in Palo Alto Sunday May 23, 2010, 7 pm, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

Deutsches Generalkonsulat San Francisco... und Umgebung

Erst einmal habe ich ja gehörig gemeckert. Darüber, dass ich für einen Reisepass persönlich beim Konsulat vorsprechen muss, somit einen Tag frei nehmen muss um in die Stadt zu fahren, darüber, wie viele Unterlagen ich anschleppen muss, et cetera. Grummelbrummel. Jetzt, da ich es hinter mir habe, kann ich berichten, dass sich alles in Wohlgefallen aufgelöst hat. Erst einmal fährt man vom Freeway ohne grössere Wendung bis fast vor die Türe. 101 wird zu Van Ness, danach muss man nur noch nach Jackson Ausschau halten. Einen Parkplatz zu finden in der Nähe des Konsulates war auch überhaupt kein Problem. Man kann sogar angenehm die Zeit totschlagen wenn man (wie wir) zu früh auftaucht indem man zu Polk Street hinüberschlendert, wo man einiges an Second-Hand Läden, Cafes, und Restaurants aufgereiht findet. Erst einmal stärkten wir uns nach der Fahrt bei It's A Grind Coffee House mit einem Tässchen bevor es auf's Konsulat ging. Nachdem wir dort fertig waren ging es schnurstracks zurück zu Polk, da ich eine nette Seidenbluse bei Town School Clothes Closet erspäht hatte. Ein bisschen teuer ist der Laden, hat aber sehr schöne Stücke. In der Zwischenzeit knurrte uns der Magen, weshalb uns Thai Spice mit seinen Gewürzfarben und sonnigen Fensterplätzen unwiderstehlich anzog. Das Dekor ist ein bisschen eleganter als beim Durchschnittsthailänder, die Preise sind aber wie überall, es ist gemütlich, und geschmeckt hat es vorzüglich.

Am Ende des Tages noch ein viel zu kurzer Abstecher in's SFMOMA, das Donnerstag Abend mit längeren Öffnungszeiten und halbiertem Eintritt Scharen von Studenten anlockt. Viel Zeit hatten wir nicht, aber gelohnt hat sich der Besuch schon deshalb, weil ich Fotograf Larry Sultan für mich entdeckt habe, den ich zuvor nicht kannte. Beeindruckend!

Übrigens, die Menschen vom Deutschen Konsulat waren sehr nett und hilfsbereit. San Francisco hatte unter dem Vorgänger des derzeitigen Konsuls einen ganz schlechten Ruf, aber ich habe durchweg nur positive Erfahrungen gemacht, telefonisch als auch im persönlichen Kontakt.

In der Lichtung vor der Bibliothek herrscht Prüfungswoche. Studenten liegen studierend auf der Wiese, laufen Handy am Ohr einzeln auf und ab, oder rauchen und husten geschichtenerzählend im Rudel.
Auf der anderen Seite liege ich auf dem Rücken unter Redwoods, graue Eichhörnchen rascheln ungesehen im Hintergrund. Es riecht nach sonnengetrockneten Tannennadeln.

Ein bisschen Geschichtsforschung online enthüllt: "Stuttgart Valley Rollergirlz e.V. ist der erste Roller Derby Verein Deutschlands. Im Frühling 2006 hatten sieben junge Frauen eine Vision: Sie wollten Roller Derby spielen und gründeten gemeinsam den Verein, dessen Eintragung dann Anfang 2007 erfolgt ist." Aha! Santa Cruz Derby Girls, March 13, 2010 Bout

Santa Cruz Derby Girls got their asses kicked Saturday! Not a good start for the season. Central Coast Roller Derby of Paso Robles, on the other hand, rocked. When the team came out it looked quite the motley crew, all shapes and sizes, different outfits, different shades of pink, not exactly like winners. The SCDG Boardwalk Bombshells on the other hand looked very hot in their black & blue uniforms, and brand new helmets. One question popped into my mind right away, though, as soon as the Bombshells rolled onto the floor. Where are the big girl blockers, last seasons awesome defense?
The right question to ask, it turned out, since SCDG's mannequin figured blockers were really weak, whereas Paso Robles' big girls dominated the jams. At one point Santa Cruz was so far behind (about 60 points!), the SC audience was so stunned that people even forgot to boo when Paso Robles scored. Bad. So come on, SCDG, what's with the tall & skinny, we're not running a model agency here! A Roller Derby team needs some hot & HEAVY power blockers instead.
After the bout we went over to Hula's, won a spot at the bar, where within a half hour we were wedged between clusters of black & blue getting hammered. In the end of the night, and with enough Mai Tais and Lilikoi Margaritas in the system, all was good again, everybody reconciled, and Birgit even got a random big hug from Roxi Scarmichael, just because... there's still a whole lot of love to share. They'll do better next time!
Correction: Birgit says hugger was Candy Hooligan. Nice!

Deutsche Krimis im Netz

Olympia ist ja schön & gut, aber worauf ich wirklich gespannt bin ist der nächste Tatort! Lange habe ich darauf gewartet mir Tatort im Netz anzusehen, im Januar habe ich dann entdeckt, dass die ARD es mir endlich ermöglich hat! Diesen Sonntag ist es wieder soweit: "Tod auf dem Rhein" am 28. Februar 2010, 20:15 Uhr, zu sehen in der Mediathek von DasErste.de. Super! Eine Beschwerde habe ich, die Videos stehen "Aus Jugendschutzgründen... jeweils ab 20:00 Uhr bis 6:00 Uhr zur Verfügung," was für mich einige Zeitverschiebungsrechnerei und seltsame Sendezeiten bedeutet. Überraschenderweise hat das ZDF anscheinend keine Bedenken seine SOKO Folgen, die ich mir schon seit einer Weile zu Gemüte führe, zu jeder Tages- & Nachtzeit zugänglich zu machen. Ist Tatort brutaler? Nicht, dass mir aufgefallen wäre, aber im Vergleich mit den immer sensationslüsterner mutierenden Ami-Krimis (mit Ausnahme von Law & Order, letzter Vertreter einer aussterbenden Gattung), in denen es nur noch so von Sexualdelikten undenklichster Art und megapsychenden Serienmördern wimmelt, kommt mir jeder deutsche Krimi noch recht zivil vor. Punkte sammelt das ZDF auch mit der Übersichtlichkeit seines Angebotes, bei der ARD bedarf es gehöriger Mühe diverse Seiten zu navigieren um ein Minimalangebot an Videos zu ermitteln. Scheint an der Struktur der ARD zu liegen, die so viele Sender unter einen Hut zu bringen hat. Na ja, da bleibt wenigsten noch was zum Anschauen wenn ich im nach Hause komme.

According to Yelp, service and food can be hit & miss. My advice to the amateur food critics not enthused over Asian chicken salad, or mushroom soup at a place called CHOCOLATE, how about you try what Chocolate does best, which is... who would have guessed?... chocolate! Hallo? Expect the hot chocolate drinks to be rich and dense, the Chicken Mole and Chocolate Barbequed Pork Roast entrees to be spicy, intense, addictive. My only complaint was the dressing on the greens; it was too acidic for me. I will ask them to hold it next time. I'd rather use the olive oil & balsamic vinegar that sit ready on every table. Otherwise, my friends and I left very happy last night. A second location under the same ownership, the Backstage Lounge, opened recently next to the Rio Theater on Soquel. It offers "Asian inspired food." The menu looks good, let's hope in this spot they even get the Sesame Chicken Salad right.

Santa Cruz County Symphony

I've been busy celebrating my birthday, as well as the birthdays of other Aquarii. By the way, there seem to be more of us every year. How is that possible? Are people converting?
Two weeks later I still find it worthwhile to report on Concert 2 of the SCC Symphony season: Bold and Beautiful, referring to Beethoven's Symphony No. 4, and Brahms' Piano Concerto No 1. The Civic's acoustics are a not that good, the sound seemed muffled, not as crisp as you would like it, but the orchestra was in really great form! We were sitting in the nosebleed section to the right side of the orchestra (where the fans of the opposing team sit at Roller Derby bouts). In terms of sound it doesn't seem to make a big difference where in the auditorium you are, but the way the piano was set up, unfortunately, we didn't see much of soloist Jon Nakamatsu from there. We really liked what we heard, though! Beautiful. The next concert "Romantic Rhapsodies" on March 27/28 (with a Saturday night performance at the Civic, and Sunday matinee at the Mello Center Watsonville) will offer Barber's Adagio for Strings, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3. Program notes:

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great American composer, Samuel Barber. We feature our string section in his moving “Adagio for Strings.” The emotionalism continues with Klein composition winner, Tessa Lark, in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The concert concludes with Mendelssohn’s melodious Third Symphony, “Scottish.”

Das Abenteuer einen deutschen Reisepass in den USA erneuern zu lassen

Als mein Reisepass das letzte Mal fällig wurde war die Welt noch soweit in Ordnung, dass es vollauf genügte 1 Antrag + 2 Fotos zusammen mit dem alten Pass ans Konsulat in San Francisco zu schicken, um nach einer Weile ganz bequem einen neuen im Briefkasten zu finden. Die gute alte Zeit!

Wenn man sich auf der Webseite schlau macht wie es denn heutzutage so funktioniert fällt die Kinnlade und will sich gar nicht mehr schliessen. Es geht damit los, dass man persönlich beim zuständigen Konsulat im Ausland auftauchen muss. Ich konnte nicht einfach meinen deutschen Reisepass beantragen als ich gerade in Deutschland war. Nein. Für meinen deutschen Pass musste ich erst einmal in die USA zurück, damit das Konsulat hier dann den Pass in Deutschland in Auftrag geben kann. Ich darf somit einen Urlaubstag dafür verbraten am Werktag in die Stadt zu fahren. Zähneknirschen. Zwecks Reisepassantrag darf man beim Konsulat auch nur mit Termin vorsprechen. Ich kann also nicht fahren wenn's mir passt, sondern dann wenn's dem Konsulat passt. Würde ich gerade noch einsehen, aber jetzt kommt der dicke Hund, man darf das Konsulat nicht direkt anrufen um einen Termin auszumachen. Das ist über eine Agentur zu erledigen, die für Anrufe $2.49 in der Minute verlangt, Durchschnittsdauer 4 Minuten. 10$ einzig für eine Uhrzeit! Fragen beantwortet diese Agentur allerdings nicht, dafür müsste man nun wiederum das Konsulat anrufen. Oder die Webseite zu Rate ziehen. Dort erfahre ich nicht nur, dass ich ein halbes dutzend beglaubigte Kopien vorlegen muss, die alle letztes Mal noch nicht nötig waren, sondern dass für den Pass selbst noch $115 hinzublättern sind. Und nicht in landesüblicher Zahlungsweise als Scheck oder auf Kreditkarte, das wäre zu einfach. Ich darf vorher noch auf die Bank um mich mit Bargeld oder Zahlungsanweisung zu wappnen. Die Freude nimmt immer noch kein Ende, denn ich entdecke, dass das Konsulat in SF in einer Gegend liegt, die einerseits schlecht von öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln versorgt wird, andererseits aber auch keine Parkplätze aufzuweisen hat. Bin ich noch überrascht? Nicht wirklich.

Einziger Lichtblick: Eine Bekannte hat mir gerade zugeflüstert, dass ein paar Blocks vom Konsulat entfernt ein Whole Foods ist, wo ich mein Autochen abstellen könnte. Danke! Ein Lichtblick in den dunklen Wirrnissen der deutschen Bürokratie.

Bestimmt gibt es einen guten Grund für jede einzelne dieser Unbequemlichkeiten, aber Mann-o-Mann! Geht's wirklich nicht einfacher?

Chocolate Festival

I meant to write about 8 Tens @ 8 at the Actor's Theatre, but before I had time to sit down, sharpen the pencil, and give you my take on it, Thursday's thespian experience was overshadowed by this afternoon's Chocolate Festival at the Cocoanut Grove. It was my first time attending this yearly fundraiser for UCSC re-entry student scholarships. Santa Cruz most famous chocolate maker, Richard Donelly, was missing, but dozens of other vendors were happy to tempt you with their creations. Since it was all for a good cause there was no reason to feel guilty about indulging, either. Perfect! I will be back next year! My favorite turned out to be dark chocolate from SwoonBeams: local, Fair Trade, and certified organic. My friend Joan loved the fudge; I was instantly hooked on their barks, in particular the Orange Ginger Bark. The products are available in local stores (Shoppers, New Leaf), and online. Fudge on the SwoonBeams website, fudge and barks on chocolate.com. In case you were wondering, no, they're not paying me! (Maybe they should, come to think. In chocolate!) They were just really nice at the fair, and I plain loved their stuff!

Ich drücke uns mal ganz fest die Daumen, dass alles sich entwickelt wie geplant, denn sich im Januar auf Flüge für August/September festzulegen erfordert schon ein gutes Mass an Optimismus, verbunden mit einem intensiven Appell an das Schicksal. Musste jetzt aber sein, wollte ich endlich meine Flyer Miles verwenden. Ich bin ganz zufrieden, denn für $63.80 habe ich Non-stop Flüge buchen können zu Zeiten, die mir erlauben zwei geniale Weinfeste zu besuchen:
Für den besten Riesling der Welt zieht es mich erst einmal nach Wiesbaden zur Rheingauer Weinwoche 2010, die vom 13. bis 22. August stattfindet. Knackevoll & voller jedes Jahr, scheint mir, aber was nimmt man nicht in Kauf für ein Weinsortiment, das eben ganz anders ist in Umfang und Qualität als das Angebot im rustikaleren Franken.
Was ganz und gar nicht abschätzig gemeint ist, Mainfranken hat seine eigenen Reize, wie in Dettelbach die "Offenen Höfe" beweisen. Offiziell heisst es von 27. bis 30.08 "Zu Gast beim Winzer - Kirchweih in Dettelbach". So ist es auch im Fränkischen Weinfestkalender verzeichnet. Nimmt man den genauer unter die Lupe stellt man fest, dass man sich jeden Tag fast an mehreren Orten verlustieren könnte. Am 21. und 22. 08.2010 zum Beispiel auch beim Straßenweinfest in Untereisenheim, das uns hier die wunderschöne Illustration liefert. Sommer, Wein, und hoffentlich lauschige Nächte, um ihn anständig zu geniessen!

Der Werbespot kam schon 2009 in Grossbritannien heraus, aber mir hat ihn eine Freundin jetzt erst gezeigt. Es sind so viele liebevolle Details eingebaut, man muss ihn mehrmals ansehen um alle zu entdecken. Auf der Firmen-Webseite kann man nicht nur das Video unter "Meet Our Bird" finden, sondern darf auch bei den Dreharbeiten kiebitzen ("Watch the making of the TV ad")

The TV spot for Robinsons "Be Natural" came out last year in the UK, but I only discovered it now through a friend. It's so carefully made, there are so many details to discover, I had fun watching it a bunch of times. When you visit the company's homepage to "Meet Our Bird" you can enjoy "The making of" in addition to the actual ad.

I hope I haven't lost all my friends here over a long break! I went home for Christmas, and had a great time spending the holidays with family and friends. I meant to hit the ground running coming back, but it was not to be. A sinus infection knocked me out for the last week. I missed the first yoga class of the season with Jayla Klein, the first Stammtisch of the new year, the poetry gathering today, and who knows what other fun events... Evil!
Thanks to Moggy I did *not* miss the last day and closing reception of a photography exhibit at the Black China Cafe: Charles Berger's Spirit Trees. I know Charles Berger from Java Junction. Brady's used to be his second home, to which a photo album can attest. Visual Bukowski. When I asked Moggy what Charles was up to these days, Moggy told me he was photographing "tree bark." True, but that doesn't even begin to describe the images. The large giclee prints on canvas are absolutely gorgeous with rich color, and incredible texture. They very much look like abstract paintings, the surface of the bark fooling you into seeing brush dabs and strokes. The website doesn't really do them justice (zooming in gives you some idea), but Charles told us that he has a book come out soon. I will keep you posted.

Beim Bloggen oft ein schlechtes Zeichen, war meine Dezemberpause allerdings eine überaus positive Geschichte. Ich war Weihnachten endlich mal wieder zuhause. Sehr schön war's! Sobald ich zurück in Santa Cruz war, hat mich allerdings eine Nebenhöhlenentzündung erst einmal komplett aus der Bahn geworfen. Weniger schön. Ein bisschen wackelig bin ich immer noch unterwegs, aber hoffen wir einmal, dass ich von jetzt an wieder von Krankheit unangefochten weiterbloggen kann.

Beinahe hätte ich es wieder verpasst. Nur gut, dass mich Gary noch rechtzeitig an die alljähriche Lighted Boat Parade erinnert hat, die am Samstag nach Sonnenuntergang am Santa Cruz Yacht Hafen stattfand. Wir kamen günstigerweise auch noch zeitig genug um einen anständigen Platz zu ergattern. Nicht in der ersten Reihe, dort hatten Zuschauer schon sehr früh ihre Stühle aufgebaut, aber doch gleich dahinter bei einem Ausblick, der zum Fotografieren immer noch prima geeignet war.
Einige Bootsbesitzer hatten sich nicht nur mit dem weihnachtlichen Lichtersschuck mächtig in's Zeug gelegt, sondern konnten sogar mit Live Bands, Weihnachts Coraling (Sternsingen) und sogar Tanznummern auf dem Deck aufwarten! Ein paar weitere Bildchen gibt's hier auf Flickr.

Als es kälter wurde zog ich auf die Jagd nach saisonal angemessenem Schuhwerk. Ich fand gleich drei Paar Schönheiten, dummerweise stellte sich im Härtetest (ein voller Tag am Fuss, bzw. die armen Füsschen einen vollen Tag auf Absätzen balancierend) heraus, dass ich nicht gerade praktisch eingekauft hatte. Gestern ging ich noch mal auf Schatzsuche. Wieder habe ich drei Paar gefunden. Ich wage zu behaupten, dass ich diesmal ein glücklicheres Händchen hatte. Die Stiefel rechts trage ich gerade, und bin komplett begeistert! Kenneth Cole Reaction. Die anderen beiden sind ganz abartige Puma Stiefel und ein Paar Naturalizer Boots. Wie ich mir das leisten kann? Ross, wo man 140$ Stiefel für 39.99$ finden kann. Glück muss man nur haben, und ein bisschen Zeit mitbringen. Gold oder Mist, man weiss nie auf was man trifft. Ist der Firma auch klar, weshalb es auf der Webseite sogar ganz offiziell Tips für die Schnäppchenjagd bei Ross gibt.

Fast seit Anbeginn meines Lebens auf Planet Cruz habe ich für Verwandte und Freunde jedes Jahr eine Santa Cruz Kalender von Prism Photographics besorgt. Dieses Jahr habe ich vergeblich darauf gewartet, dass die 2010 Ausgabe in die Läden kommt. Prism existiert anscheinend nicht mehr. So was Dummes! Zwar finden sich auf der Prism Webseite noch die Kalender vergangener Jahre, aber ein aktueller wird nicht angeboten. Anrufe und E-Mails waren fruchtlos.
Auf meiner Suche nach Alternativen bin ich auf Lulu.com gestossen, einen Internet-Anbieter, durch den man Bücher, CDs, und eben auch Kalender im Eigenverlag herausgeben und auch vertreiben kann. Selbst ist die Frau, dacht' ich mir, wenn's denn sein muss! Der Entwurf des Kalenders war eine Herausforderung, die firmeneigene Software war wohl noch in der Testphase und liess zu wünschen übrig. Nachdem das Ding nun endlich steht bin ich jedoch stolz auf mein Werk (obwohl ich's noch nicht in natura gesehen habe). Ich glaube zwar nicht, dass jetzt ein phänomenaler Andrang nach meinem Kalender einsetzen wird, aber ich find's trotzdem klasse, wie er so professionell anmutend im Netz steht. Kaufen kann man übrigens auch in ganz Europa. da Lulu.com u.a in Grossbritannien zuhause ist, und Bestellungen von dort in EG-Länder verschickt.

Eigentlich wollte ich A Serious Man, den neuesten Coen Brothers Film ansehen, aber die Mehrheit meiner Indie Film Gruppe hat sich für An Education ausgesprochen, der mir am Ende sehr gut gefallen hat. Nicht nur ist Carey Mulligan ausgezeichnet in der Hauptrolle, auch die Nebenrollen sind hochkarätig besetzt. Für mich hat der Film vor allem bildhaft gemacht in welche Welt ich Anfang der Sechziger geboren worden bin. Das Drehbuch stammt von Nick Hornby, Regie geführt hat die dänische "Dogma" Regisseurin Lone Scherfig. Für Deutschland habe ich noch keine Erwähnung gefunden, in der Schweiz jedoch kommt der Film laut www.kulturinfo.ch im Februar 2010 in die Kinos:
"1961. Jenny ist 16 und träumt von Paris – von einer gloriosen Existenz unter Gauloises-Rauchern an der Seine. Einstweilen muss das hübsche intelligente Mädchen allerdings noch die Schulbank drücken, sofern sie nicht gerade in Twickenham in ihrem Mädchenzimmer Juliette-Gréco-Chansons mitträllert.
Jenny kann es gar nicht abwarten, erwachsen zu werden. I've been severely neglecting my blog. I was occupied with grave matters in my free time, namely putting a formal application together for continuation of my German citizenship while pursuing US citizenship. Germany does not allow dual citizenship, but might grant it as an exception to the rule if you can prove necessity. I was always perfectly happy with my status as an "Alien" until this spring, when all of a sudden first my job, then my mom's health were at serious risk. A double blow that reminded me how fragile the circumstances of my life really are, that they can drastically change at any given time. Becoming a citizen would put me on much solid ground in terms of the job market and residency requirements. It would eliminate restrictions as to how long I can stay out of the US, which has become infinitely more important than it was in the past, in a very scary way. I just have to give it a shot.

Roller Derby letzten Samstag

Seit zwei Jahren gibt es in Santa Cruz deftiges Frauen Roller Derby. In der Zwischenzeit bestehen die Santa Cruz Derby Girls sogar schon aus zwei Mannschaften, den Harbor Hellcats und den Boardwalk Bombshells. Ich hatte schon des öfteren gehört wie klasse die Wettkämpfe sind, ganz abgesehn davon, dass mir die Poster schon immer gefallen haben, aber ich habe mich erst am Samstag überzeugen lassen mir ein Derby endlich einmal live anzusehen. Beim letzten Einsatz der Saison (zwei Wochen vorher schon ausverkauft) war die Stimmung riesig! Im Video versucht Harbor Hellcat's Co-Captain Pippi Hard Socking kurz vor Schluss einen 13 Punkte Rückstand gegen die Sac City Rollers' Folsom Prison Bruisers aufzuholen, was ihr auch fast gelingt. Aber leider nur fast. Im nächsten Wettbewerb konnten dafür die Santa Cruz Boardwalk Bombshells ihren Vorsprung bis zum Schluss halten und trugen somit den Sieg über Sacramento's Capital Punishers davon. Wir hatten so viel Spass, dass ich mir überlege ob ich mir nicht einen Saisonpass besorgen soll wenn's im März wieder losgeht.

Sin Nombre

Am Sonntag habe ich mir mit eine paar von meinen SCIFAM Leutchen noch Sin Nombre angesehn, einen Film der beim berühmten Sundance Film Festival 2009 gleich zwei Preise gewinnen konnte, für Regie und Cinematographie. Ich weiss gar nicht wann mir das letzte Mal ein Film so unter die Haut gegangen ist. Mir ist klar, dass ich Gewalt ganz schlecht vertrage, das Problem ist nur aus den Kritiken herauszulesen wie brutal ein Film auf mich persönlich wirken wird. Die meisten Zuschauer scheinen eine ganz anders gesteckte Schmerzgrenze zu haben als ich, weshalb ich wirklich zwischen den Zeilen lesen muss. Ein paar Wochen zuvor hat mir District 9 in der Nacht nach dem Kinobesuch Alpträume beschert. Im Gegensatz zu Sin Nombre kann ich über gemetzelte Ausserirdische dann aber doch schneller hinwegkommen, zumal wenn die Ausserirdischen comicfigurenmässig wie mit dem aufrechten Gang gesegnete Langusten daherkommen, Palinurus sapiens sozusagen.
Sin Nombre ist mir ganz anders an Nieren gegangen. Zu realistisch um es bequem ablegen zu können. Wunderschön geschossen erwirbt der Film mit warmen, intensiven Farben und Licht wie Honig der Unbarmherzigkeit der dritten Welt Zugang zu Herz & Hirn der Zuschauer, und zeigt wie fürchterlich nahe die Grausamkeit geographisch ist, die wir uns immer gerne ganz weit weg vorstellen möchten. So schnell wird der Eindruck nicht verblassen, wenn überhaupt.

The Pac Rim Film Fest is taking place right now, October 16-21, to be precise. I love it! I enjoyed it so much in previous years. Not only do the organizers and sponsors of the he festival manage to offer it free to the public, they also pick really interesting documentaries and well made, beautiful movies.

After the screening of Third Wave last night, director Alison Thompson and producer Oscar Gubernati were available for comments and a Q&A session. After you've been following their adventures on the screen for an hour and a half, it was amazing to see the protagonists in person, to experience how characters on the screen turn into living breathing, human beings in front of your eyes! Very cool! And of course it really brought the message of the movie home!

Tonight I'll be seeing Tuya's Marriage for sure, and I might be staying for Like A Virgin.

Auf der Arbeit war ich letzte Woche gut damit beschäftigt rechtzeitig zum 20sten Jubiläum eine Reihe von Fotos vom Loma Prieta Erbeben in 1989 zu scannen und zu bearbeiten. Die Aufnahmen stammen von Vester Dick, einem ortsansässigen Fotografen, der die Monate nach dem Beben dokumentiert hat. Wir durften eine Auswahl treffen, die für die Bibliothekswebsite verwendet wurde. So ein Projektchen hätte ich gerne öfter!

The Cabrillo College Visual & Performing Arts Complex will host a celebratory grand opening weekend, October 9 – 11. “Dedicated to the Creative Journey” is the theme for the weekend which will include a gala performance and interactive art events, all free to the public... The Gala Performance in the new Crocker Theater will be a mix of the music, theatre and dance. Over 500 performers and technicians have volunteered their time and talents. The Gala Performance takes place Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10, at 8:00 PM, followed by a public reception outside. An encore Sunday matinee will be performed at 3:00 PM. Herta Müller & Die Blassen Herren

Wofür so ein Nobelpreis gut ein kannn... Mir hat er meine Lust auf Lyrik wiederbelebt. Sofort nach Bekanntgabe der Ehrung habe ich mir neugierig Herta Müllers Gedichtbände vom Regal der Bibiothek gegriffen. Ertwartet habe ich Depremierendes und Depressives, das Überleben einer Diktatur mit angeschlagener Moral & blaugefleckter Psyche und so weiter. Ganz anders sind die Gedichte, leichter und witziger, und doch mit plötzlichen Wendungen, zumeist in dunklere Gefilde. Ich bin ganz begeistert. Paktischerweise hat sich auch die Frage, was ich wohl Joe Stroud's Poetry Workshop präsentieren könnte in Wohlgefallen aufgelöst. Übersetzungen meiner nagelneuen Lieblingsdichterin natürlich! Auf Lyrikline kann man einer Auswahl ihrer Gedichte in Rumänisch und Deutsch ansehen & anhören. Nicht meine Lieblinsgedichte, aber doch sehr sorgfältig aufgezogen, die Collagen wurden orginalgetreu ins Netz gestellt. Hier noch eine Kritik des Bandes, den ich mir zuerst vorgenommen habe: Die blassen Herren mit den Mokkatassen, besprochen von Dorothea Gilde.

Um noch kurz vom Oktoberfest im Tyrolean Inn zu berichten: Sehr nett war's! Eine Mischung von gut gelauntem Dorffest & beschwipster Karnevalsfeier. Der Alkoholpegel war dabei durchaus noch angenehm, obwohl es ausschliesslich Münchner Bier vom Fass gab, Halbe oder Mass. Salvator haut rein! Ich habe tatsächlich richtig schöne, teure, d.h. allem Anschein nach tatsächlich in Bayern erstandene Hirschlederne gesichtet, sowie auch ganz selbstverstandlich getragene Originaldirndl. Auf der anderen Seite schmiss sich vor allem die jugendlichere Fraktion mit Gusto in verwegenere Outfits, die Girls in Dirndlversionen, die ganz eindeutig dem Halloweensortiment entstammten. Ein Dorfkostümfest, sozusagen. Von den Wettbewerben haben wir das "Stein Holding" mitbekommen, bei dem ein Masskrug in jeder Hand mit gerade ausgestreckten Armen so lange gehalten wird, bis die Wettkämpfer ellenbogenmässig einknicken. Lustig! Jodeln war nicht solange wir dort verweilten, dafür Polka ohne Pause. Big Lou's war nicht schlecht. Ich habe den Verdacht, dass sie mir in anderen Bandinkarnationen besser gefallen könnte. Big Lou ist übrigens als Pin-up auf den "West Coast Accordion Babes" Kalender zu sehn. Oktoberfest Fazit: Gut gefeiert; ich komme nächstes Jahr wieder!

Oktoberfest

Morgen werde ich mich in die Santa Cruz Mountains zum Oktoberfest im Tyrolean Inn wagen. Ein paar Leutchen vom Stammtisch werden sich dort im Biergarten zum Feiern einfinden, unter anderem sei Angela rühmlich erwähnt, da sich sich bereit erklärt hat als Chauffeur (oder authentischer als Chauffeuse) zu fungieren. Da bedanke ich mich doch ganz herzlich, dass ich den Bierkonsum nicht allzu rigoros einschränken muss! Natürlich wird es mega-kitschig! Dass eine angesteuert bayrische Gastwirtschaft, die mit böhmischer Polka beschallt und mit Schwarzwälder Kuckucksuhren bestückt ist, dann auch noch nach Tirol benannt wurde, stellt einen fast schon als genial zu verzeichnenden Rundumschlag dar. Alles abgedeckt! Sauber! Drei Tage wird hier die lokale Version des Oktoberfests gefeiert. Big Lou's Polka Band und die Alpen Band California spielen auf. Zur Unterhaltung stehen im Angebot "Beer Stein Holding, Pretzel Count, and Yodeling." Erwürdige bavarische Traditionen eben, von denen kein Bayern noch niemals nichts gehört hat, vom Jodeln abgesehen. Fragt mich nicht, fragt mich nicht, zumindest jetzt noch nicht, fragt mich später. Lustig wird's auf jeden Fall, davon gehe ich doch mal aus!

Patrick, der Foto Archivar in Special Collections, hat heute dry-farmed Heirloom Tomaten von zu Hause mitgebracht, d.h. alte Sorten, die mit wenig Wasser gezogen wurden. Statt gleichmässig rot und rund wie gewohnt haben die Tomaten ganz ungewöhnliche Formen und Farben. Sie sind sehr fest im Fleisch, schmecken intensiv und süss. Ich habe mir noch Zucchini, gelben Squash, und Minikaroffeln von der UCSC Farm (alles Bio) dazugekauft. Dazu gutes Olivenöl, guten Parmesan, und ich stelle fest, dass ein simples Essen superlecker sein kann, wenn die Zutaten von hoher Qualität sind.

Segeln am Samstag war super! Der anfängliche Nebel hat sich schön gelichtet, so dass wir bei strahlendem Sonnenschein Santa Cruz einmal von der anderen Seite, d.h. vom Meer aus bewundern konnten. Ich hatte meinen Fotoapperat nicht dabei, aber wie an der Kostprobe hier zu sehen ist hat Greg ein paar sehr nette Aufnahmen gemacht. Ich möchte auf jeden Fall wieder in See stechen; das nächste Mal schiesse ich dann meine eigenem Fotos.

Vor ein paar Wochen statteten Paul und ich Felton's Roaring Camp mal wieder einen Besuch ab um das alljährliche Musical Saw Festival auszukundschaften. Das sogar in Wikipedia erwähnte Festgesäge zeigte sich deutlich von Western- und Pioneer-Nostalgie durchdrungen. Das urig-amerikanische hat anscheinend auch für die andere Seite des Pazifiks seine Reize, denn es waren erstaunlich viele japanische Musiker beim Wettbewerb vertreten. Oder entspricht der klagende bis gespenstisch wimmernde Klang der Säge schlichtweg der asiatischen Gemütslage? Uns eröffnete sich ein ganzes Sägeuniversum. An Ständen wurde eine erstaunliche Vielfalt an Zubehör angeboten. T-Shirts natürlich, aber auch exotischeres wie spezielle, schick geschneiderte Sägeschutzhüllen zum sicheren Transport der geschätzten Instrumente, oder diverse Hämmerchen zum Sägestimmen(?). Trotz der Originalität der Sägeenthusiasten hätte ich mir vielleicht einen Blogeintrag erspart da das Fest nun doch schon wieder ein Zeit zurückliegt, nur bin ich bei meinen Recherchen auf die (zumindest mir bisher) unbekannte Tatsache gestossen, dass Marlene Dierich zu ihrer Zeit anscheinend als Sägevirtuosin galt. Das musste ich dann doch noch berichten, vor allem da Marlenchen auch noch sooo hübsch aussieht beim Sägen!

Das Lockheed Feuer ist zu 80% unter Kontrolle. Der Sentinel veröffentlichte heute eine Seite mit Fotolinks, die sich fast schon wie eine Nachrede ausnimmt. Gefahr gebannt, alle dürfen nach Hause, Evakuierte ebenso wie die teilweise weit angereisten Feuerwehrmänner. Schön. Die Luft ist allerdings immer noch furchtbar. Nebel und Rauch verbinden sich gerade nachts zu einer dicken Suppe. Es stinkt weiterhin gewaltig. Wenn dieser Smog jetzt nur noch vorüber wäre...

Die Karte zeigt das heutige Ausmass des Lockheed Feuers. Ganz schön gross! Gestern musste ich bis nach Pescadero fahren (das dürften so an die 50 km sein) um endlich auf einigermassen frische Luft und blauen Himmel zu stossen. Auf der Cal Fire Webseite (Kalifornischen Amt für Forst und Feuerschutz) findet man die dazugehörigen Daten. Der Brand ist zu 65% unter Kontrolle. Fein. Heisst aber auch, dass 35% der Fläche immer noch vor sich hin kokeln, was man auf jeden Fall an der Luft spürt. Es stinkt noch gewaltig. Die gute Neuigkeit: Die Einwohner Bonny Doon's, somit auch meine Chefin, durften gestern abend nach Hause zurückkehren. Eine Riesenerleichterung.

I was so sick and tired of the smoke yesterday, I got in the car & took HWY 1 up the coast on a quest for clean air. I actually saw the fire from the road at the marsh between Davenport and Big Basin. For a moment I thought the State Park was on fire! I had to venture as far as Pescadero. On the way smoke was gradually replaced by fog. Not exactly what I was looking for, so I turned inland, passed the Fun Fest taking place in town, and headed towards Butano State Park and Gazos Creek Road where I finally found blue sky. I was surprised that the air so far north would still not have that sweet, earthy quality it usually has in the woods. Although much better than around Santa Cruz, it still slightly tasted of ash! Thank good the firefighters are making good progress.

Waldbrand wütet in den Santa Cruz Mountains

Eine weitere Schlagzeile, eine die wir lieber nicht gesehen hätten, diesmal in der Süddeutschen: Gepeinigtes Santa Cruz. Gepeinigt von einem weiteren Waldbrand in Bonny Doon, einer kleinen Gemeinde nördlich von Santa Cruz, die erst letztes Jahr heimgesucht wurde. Das Feuer ist 10 Meilen von der Stadt entfernt, hat aber schnell solche Ausmasse angenommen, dass seit Donnerstag nicht nur die Innenstadt, sondern die ganze Bucht bis Monterey unter den Rauchwolken leidet. In Santa Cruz darf man zeitweise die Fenstern gar nicht mehr öffnen. Scheinbar ist sogar Carmel Valley betroffen. Die auf der Autoschau ausgestellten Luxuskarossen müssen den ganzen Tag fortwährend nachpoliert werden, da feine Asche auf sie niederregnet. Meine Chefin, die in Bonny Doon wohnt, wurde am Donnerstag evakuiert. Ihr Haus ist bisher verschont geblieben, doch es ist wie weitere 250 Häuser immer noch von den Flammen bedroht. Santa Cruz County wurde zum Notstandsgebiet erklärt, heute kam Schwarzenegger sogar persönlich zur Stippvisite. Die Feurwehr schätzt, dass der Brand frühestens Dienstag unter Kontrolle sein dürfte. Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass sie die Häuser auch weiterhin schützen können.

Fire Season Has Hit Santa Cruz

My boss has lived in Bonny Doon for 30 years. Last year her family home was threatened by wildfire for the first time in all these years. This year, the house is at risk for the second time. This morning's voluntary evacuations turned into "mandatory evacuations for the Bonny Doon area affecting 500-1,000 homes... also a mandatory evacuation of approximately 300 people in the Swanton area." according to Cal Fire. The fire is called the Lockheed Fire because it began close to the company's property on Wednesday evening. The Santa Cruz Sentinel has updates and helpful links (photo also by Shmuel Thaler/Sentinel), although the Cal Fire website loads very slowly, specifically the Lockheed Fire page, probably due to high traffic.

Endlich mal wieder ein Blogeintrag in Deutsch! Mein treuester Leser hat zwar immer noch keinen Internetzugang (die Klinik hat mehr erpichte Nutzer als Rechner aufzuweisen, und die Mutter mag sich natürlich nicht unbedingt in die Warteschlange einreihen), aber meine Notiz dürfte doch für die deutsche Fraktion interessanter sein. Carmel, hier um die Ecke, hat es zu einer Spiegelschlagzeile gebracht! Dank einer Debatte allerdings über die Authentizität eines Rennwagens aus dem Jahr 1939, angepriesen vom Auktionshaus Bonhams & Butterfields als "Hans Stuck’s Legendary Auto Union Grand Prix Racer"
Die morgige Auktion findet praktischerweise zeitgleich statt mit dem Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, laut Website "the world’s premier celebration of the automobile." Die Crème de la Crème Autoschau ist das zweitgrösste Ereignis des Jahres auf der Monterey Peninsula, gleich nach dem Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Golf Tournament, das im Februar vor dem Panorama der Pazifikküste auf einem der schönsten Golfkurse der Welt stattfindet. Allerdings auch ein oft derb verregneter Wettbewerb, aber ein echter Golfer trotzt den Naturgewalten. Natürlich schlägt weder die eine, noch die andere Veranstaltung grosse Wellen an deutschen Gestaden, weshalb ich hier ein wenig Hintergrundinformation liefern wollte. Um am Ende wieder auf den Auto-Union-Rennwagen vom Typ D zurückzukommen:

Photos of Julius Caesar by r.r. jones are up now on flickr as well as on Shakespeare Santa Cruz. One good looking production! My friend Joan went as far as to proclaim it simply the BEST Julius Caesar, a play that she loves. She also came to the defense of Jonathan David Visser. I still think that he's too young, too tall, too skinny, too sober, too nice and healthy looking to play a man, who I know for certain was a dark, brutish, aging rakehell heavily into drink and fornication. Plutarch, anybody? To quote:

...with the better class and with all well conducted people his general course of life made him, as Cicero says, absolutely odious, utter disgust being excited by his drinking bouts at all hours, his wild expenses, his gross amours, the day spent in sleeping or walking off his debauches, and the night in banquets and at theaters, and in celebrating the nuptials of some comedian or buffoon.

By the age of forty, his lifestyle must have left its marks, particularly since he started having fun while still quite young. Richard Burton, for example, was a great Antony in appearance, slightly pasty faced and about to lose his waist line. My absolute favorite for the role is James Purefoy on Rome. Sexy, sincere, scary, disgusting. I could not possibly imagine a more perfect Antony. But I digress...
Back to my friend Joan and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Vehemently opposing me, she thought Jonathan David Visser's Antony stunning, her endorsement followed by no less than five exclamation marks. Five!!!!!
Well, she did see Caesar before Midsummer Night's Dream.
Apart from that I can only point out that

There's no need for me to talk about Midsummer Night's Dream; let me refer you to the excellent article by Robert Hurwitt in the Chronicle. While browsing the web I also discovered Shakespeare Santa Cruz's brand new flickr photostream (not on the SSC site yet) with beautiful shots of Midsummer Night's Dream by veteran photographers r.r. jones and Shmuel Thaler.
Now, let's talk about Caesar. If you haven't seen Midsummer Night yet, I urge you to hold off! Start with Julius Caesar. Why? I will tell you why!

Local writer Christina Waters ends her Midsummer review on SantaCruz.com with an enthusiastic "And to think that all of these performers will transform themselves, yet again, into the cast of Julius Caesar!" Careful what you wish for! I also thought that Scott Wentworth delivered an outstanding performance as Nick Bottom. I was very much looking forward to his Brutus, but as brooding savior of the republic he seemed rather subdued, at least in the preview we attended. The even bigger surprise, though, was sweet Thisbe turned Mark Antony. Like Wentworth, Jonathan David Visser was perfect in his comedic role, absolutely hilarious as the maiden "mechanical," but meeting him again as Antony was somewhat... disturbing. Try as I may, I could not erase Thisbe's falsetto voice & ingenious fake breasts from my memory. A Mark Antony, who looks like Conan O'Brien, is about a decade and a half younger than he should be, with outrageously effective plunger cups strapped to his chest (in my impressionable mind), is an Antony I cannot take seriously, I am sorry! I love Antony's speech at Caesar's funeral. It could have been the highlight of the play, but with these images lodged in my brain I felt cheated out of it. Visser is a talented actor, no doubt, but not one who should play Mark Antony. To avoid the surreal experience I had I would suggest you see Julius Caesar first. (Unless you're into surreal experiences, then go for it!)

Now, why should you see Caesar? Let me tell you why!

The BBC production I mentioned yesterday left me with the memory of rather philosophical dialogues delivered by aging men wrapped in drab & limp bed sheets. Shakespeare Santa Cruz cured me instantly of the idea that the play should be colorless & abstract. It starts with a bang, and delivers more until the end. What was I thinking, of course! It has a bloody assassination at its heart! Fittingly, blood-red is the dominant color. Red on black, as our protagonists wear the black suits of politicians instead of togas. The only nod to Roman fashion are red scarves draped over the men's shoulders, held by epaulets. Caesar stands out in the pseudo-military uniform of a dictator, royal purple on tan to signify his singular power. (Costumes by B. Modern, wonderfully coherent, beautiful in their simplicity).

I never thought much of green-with-envy Cassius before, but Chris Butler let me fall in love with him by delivering the most entertaining, most lively performance. Downright adorable! Butler played the schemer with so much gusto, he carried the play, he propelled the play, and swept us away in the process.

Before I found time to write about "Midsummer Night's Dream" I'm about to attend the next play. My friend Joan recommended Shipwrecked, but Paul opted for Julius Caesar, so "...The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told By Himself)" have to wait. After preparing for Caesar by watching a BBC production of the play, reading Steven Saylor, revisiting "Rome", and researching the historical authenticity of all these fictional accounts, I found myself almost too immersed in Roman history to look forward to an Elizabethan interpretation of it. We picked a preview night, though, so I won't have to regret the expense of a Saturday night show. It's a good way to ensure I'll enjoy the performance even if it turns out to be mediocris.

I'm looking forward to opening night tomorrow. I have no idea what to expect in terms of stage design and costumes. It'll be one big surprise since Shakespeare Santa Cruz has not published any photos of this years productions on the website yet. I just discovered a pretty nifty Virtual Tour of the Glen, though.

Trivia at the Aptos Brit

I did not exactly deliver a shining performance at Britannia Arms Trivia Night yesterday. I had expected to fare as well as I usually do with Jeopardy, but alas, there's a difference! I'm stronger in history, literature, and the arts, but Britannia Arms' Trivia Quiz seems to gravitate towards pop culture, sports, and science, which makes perfect sense considering the likely interests of your regular Brit pub patron. Which is not to say that the questions were easy, on the contrary! We were treated to questions like "which part of your body could be referred to as deciduous," for example, and asked to match moons Phobos, Io, Titan, Titania, Triton, and Hydra with their corresponding planets. What? What? Mercy! The trick is to create a well rounded team, i.e. recruit group members with complementing fields of expertise. All together, we actually did really well. We even won one round and received a gift certificate that we immediately put to good use. No Pilsener here, but the Scottish Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA turned out to be pretty tasty.

Carmel Valley

Of course it was silly to expect sun anywhere on the Monterey Peninsula yesterday, but isn't it great that all you need to do is turn inland! We had to venture as far as Garland Ranch to escape the fog, but it was worth it. The park is lovely, Rancho and Lupine Loops are perfect for a leisurely stroll. They're even equipped with benches should you feel like sitting & soaking up the sun.
For dinner we picked El Torito on Cannery Row. It's a chain, it's casual, and it's noisy. The music at the bar is horrible hard rock. Expect kids to run around in the dining area. Yet, the place is unbeatable when it comes to oceanfront dining at affordable prices. The food was much better than I had expected, and the view was absolutely gorgeous.

The Good News:

Family & friends already know why I didn't post here for more than two months, but not everybody might be aware of the latest developments. If you were afraid to even ask you'd be happy to know that my Mom is fine, relatively speaking. Not healthy yet by any stretch of the imagination, but considering how long she had been in the ICU in very serious condition we're very excited about her progress. (Damn, we're freakin' ecsatic that she's still alive!). The resulting critical illness polyneuropathy is the big challenge now, but my sister tells me that Mom is highly motivated and in good spirits. She was transferred to the Neurologische Klinik Bad Neustadt, which seems an excellent place for rehab. Our hope is that she will fully recover, as 50 % of patients suffering from CIP do regain complete mobility, but for now we're happy about every step in the right direction, however small.

Alle Freunde und Verwandten wissen weshalb hier mehr als zwei Monate Funkstille herrschte, aber nicht alle sind über den letzten Stand der Dinge informiert. Wer nicht mehr zu fragen wagte: Der Mutter geht's gut, d.h. relativ gut in Anbetracht dessen wie lange sie in Lebensgefahr schwebte. Da sie noch eine Critical-Illness-Polyneuropathie zu meistern hat wird es zwar noch eine Weile dauern bis sie ganz gesund sein wird, aber sie ist munter! In der Zwischenzeit ist sie zur Reha in der Bayrischen Rhön, in der Neurologischen Klinik Bad Neustadt. Meine Schwester erzählt, dass es ihr dort sehr gut gefällt, und dass sie äusserst motiviert ist wieder zu Kräften zu kommen. Mann, sind wir froh! Ich kann es kaum erwarten, dass ihr Telefon und/oder Rechner zur Verfügung stehen, so dass ich wieder direkt mit ihr reden kann!

Die letzten Monate haben mir drastisch vor Augen geführt wie von Tragödien unbeleckt ich doch eigentlich bisher gewesen bin, wie lange ich so naiv vor mich hinsegeln durfte in weitgehender Ignoranz, dass der Tod auch in meiner Welt stattfinden könnte und würde. Ich bin kuriert, vom Schlimmsten aber weiterhin verschont. Auf Zeit. Die gezählt ist. Meine, und die der Menschen, die ich liebe. Soviel weiss ich jetzt doch.

Good Bye to Kathleen

Over the last couple of weeks, whenever I remembered that I had plans for this Sunday my first thought was that I would see Kathleen. I had to remind myself over and over that I would not meet her in person, but only in the form of family and friends' memories of her. Each time the realization came as a shock, part of my brain apparently still in denial. Kathleen's Service was very sad, but also very sweet. The Church couldn't hold all the people, who came. So many simply adored her. It's still hard to understand how somebody so vibrant could completely disappear. But of course the love everybody feels for her lives on, as does her poetry, which is on display now at 913 Cedar Street in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz Film Festival, May 7-15

Meanwhile, back in our little town, the Santa Cruz Film Festival will present an impressive 120 films from 29 countries during 9 days and nights. On Thursday May 7, festivities commence with Gospel Hill at the Del Mar, followed by an Opening Night Gala at The Museum of Art & History. The schedule just came out. I have my eye on Saturday's Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love, otherwise I'm still pondering my options for the rest of the week. Since I want to enjoy at least one of the parties, though, I've already made a commitment to attend the Closing Night Film Automorphosis, Awards Ceremony, and Gala on Friday, May 15 at the Vets Hal.

SCIFAM Movie Maven Amy will be out of town. When I showed interest in hosting Closing Night she officially promoted me to SCIFAM Assistant Organizer, which means that I could post events independently from now on should I feel so inclined. Very cool!
